Indonesia Seeks Stronger Role for Hajj Fund Manager in Law Revision

Indonesia’s Hajj Ministry wants to strengthen the Hajj fund manager’s role in a planned revision of the law on managing Hajj finances.

The government also wants Hajj funds used only for Hajj purposes, under a principle that keeps the money restricted to that use.

The proposal concerns the Hajj Financial Management Agency, known as BPKH, which manages money for people going on pilgrimage and those waiting to go.

The Hajj minister says diversifying investments could reduce risk and increase benefits for pilgrims.

BPKH said it managed Rp 185.73 trillion as of September 2026, and must balance current costs with benefits for future pilgrims.

The government has sent a letter to parliament, and discussions on the law revision, including BPKH’s role, are continuing.

Our hope is more to strengthen BPKH’s role, while also ensuring that the funds become a restricted fund, meaning Hajj funds are for Hajj and do not go outside Hajj.

God willing, this can strengthen us so we can manage Hajj finances more optimally, and provide more optimal benefits for pilgrims, both those waiting and those departing.
