South Korean judges consider early meeting amid pressure on chief justice

South Korea’s National Conference of Court Representatives is weighing an earlier meeting to discuss concerns within the judiciary.

The conference brings together judges from courts across the country.

It may hold an emergency meeting this month or move up its regular meeting, which is scheduled for December 7.

The discussion follows ruling-party efforts to pursue a parliamentary investigation into Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae.

Cho is also facing calls to resign.

These developments have prompted more judges to call for discussion of the independence of the judiciary.

The conference’s chair said it was watching the situation outside the courts, but no meeting date has been confirmed.
