Russia plans storage systems for all new solar power projects

Russia plans to require energy storage at all solar power projects, Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev told lawmakers.

The requirement will be applied to a solar power facility now being built in the Far East.

Tsivilev said the Far East already has projects totaling 1.4 gigawatts for solar and wind power.

Energy storage systems can hold electricity for use when generation is not available.

The ministry also considers storage appropriate for future selection rounds for clean energy projects.

Russia plans about 6.2 gigawatts of renewable capacity, according to a figure Tsivilev gave earlier.

The new requirement signals that storage is to be included in solar projects going forward.
