KT&G shares rise as investors expect stronger shareholder returns

KT&G shares rose in early trading in South Korea on Oct.

19, even as the wider market fell.

The company’s stock was up between 0.31% and 0.79% in morning trading, according to two reports.

KT&G had risen for four straight trading sessions, and gained 7.4% over the previous week as the KOSPI index fell by more than 14%.

Investors are watching for a new shareholder-return policy expected later this year and possible higher year-end dividends.

Shareholder returns are ways a company gives value back to investors, including through dividends.

Analysts also said market volatility can make defensive stocks such as KT&G more attractive because they may hold up better in uncertain conditions.

One analyst expected these factors to support the shares through the end of the year, while the company’s policy announcement is still to come.
