Migrant arrivals surge in Spain's Canary Islands, straining services

Migrant arrivals to Spain’s Canary Islands have surged in the first six days of November.

One account said rescue services had rescued 3,261 people; another counted more than 4,200 arrivals, so the figures differ.

El Hierro, a small island off northwest Africa, is a key arrival point, and its regional leader says the situation there is unsustainable.

Calm seas are helping people make the dangerous Atlantic crossing from West Africa, where overcrowded boats and long distances put lives at risk.

The surge is putting pressure on healthcare, transport and rescue crews, and at least nine people have died near the islands in recent weeks.

Authorities have restarted transfers of new arrivals to other islands to avoid overwhelming local facilities, while the Canary Islands’ leader has asked Spain’s prime minister for an urgent meeting.
