Spain faces an unusual general strike over housing costs

Spain’s general strike is set for November 11 and is expected to affect workplaces and public life.

It was prompted by a tenants’ movement demanding action on housing costs, then formally called by the major unions, CC OO and UGT.

The campaign followed protests after Maricarmen Abascal, 87, was evicted from her home and died 15 days later.

The last general strike in Spain was in 2012, and this one is unusual because it focuses mainly on housing rather than workplace issues.

The unions expect strong participation at major companies, including Seat’s car plant in Martorell, but turnout elsewhere is uncertain.

High housing costs are the central concern, especially in cities where finding an affordable home is difficult.

Remote work may make participation harder to measure, and employers differ on whether staff should work from home that day.
