World Science Forum Opens in Shanghai, Focusing on the Next Decade

The 2026 World Laureates Forum opened in Shanghai on October 31, bringing together scientists, educators and business leaders from China and abroad.

This year’s theme is how science may change and what breakthroughs could come in the next decade.

The forum includes sessions on artificial intelligence, energy, medicine and other fields, as well as activities for young scientists and women in science leadership.

At the opening, awards recognized mathematician Ingrid Daubechies and four researchers for work on programmed cell death; six young scholars received the first Young Scientist Award.

Speakers said AI can help researchers test ideas faster, but stressed that scientific cooperation and strong research questions remain important.

The forum runs through November 1, with further discussions on science and international cooperation.
