Umrah pilgrims stranded in Makassar after Houthi attack on Riyadh airport

Some Indonesian pilgrims travelling for umrah, the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, were stranded at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Their journeys were disrupted after a Houthi attack on Riyadh airport in Saudi Arabia.

Indonesian lawmakers said the pilgrims’ safety must come before keeping travel schedules.

They called on the government and umrah travel organizers to account for affected pilgrims and clearly explain flight and accommodation arrangements.

They also said people waiting should receive suitable places to rest, food, information and support, with special attention to older people and those with health needs.

Pilgrims were advised to follow official updates and wait for confirmation from their travel organizers before going to the airport.

Officials were urged to coordinate with Saudi authorities and base travel decisions on safety guidance.
