Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 more years in Hong Kong prison

A Hong Kong court sentenced activist Joshua Wong to 10 more years in prison for colluding with foreign powers.

Wong, 30, pleaded guilty to the charge, which was brought under Hong Kong’s national security law.

He is already serving four years and eight months in prison for a separate national security conviction.

Wong first became widely known for leading protests in 2012 and the 2014 Umbrella Movement, which sought political change in Hong Kong.

The prosecution said his international lobbying sought foreign pressure on Hong Kong and China, while critics say the case shows a continuing crackdown on the city’s pro-democracy movement.

The added sentence means Wong will remain in prison beyond the release he had been expected to have in January 2027.
