IHO to establish maritime data infrastructure center in South Korea

The International Hydrographic Organization plans a center in South Korea to support the digital use of maritime information.

The government and the IHO are due to sign an agreement to establish it on Nov.

9.

The IHO sets international standards for nautical charts and other maritime information.

Its S-100 standard combines charts, tides and currents on ship navigation equipment.

The center will focus on developing and testing S-100 and supporting its use around the world.

The standard could support autonomous ships and smart ports.

It would be the IHO's first organization outside Monaco, where it established its headquarters in 1921.
