India fines Justdial and Sunrise Foods over listings and bread claims
India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority fined Justdial Rs 10 lakh for listings of ammonium nitrate on its online directory.
The authority said the listings lacked safeguards to check sellers’ licences and buyers’ eligibility, and to track transactions.
Ammonium nitrate is a regulated explosive substance, and the listings also lacked warnings about legal restrictions on its possession and use.
The authority fined Sunrise Foods Rs 1 lakh over its “100% Whole Wheat Bread” claim, saying the bread contained 64% whole wheat, below the 75% threshold for the “whole-wheat bread” name.
It said the packaging did not state the proportion of whole wheat, which could mislead consumers about the product.
The orders require Justdial to stop listing the substance and Sunrise Foods to end the claim across media; Sunrise Foods must also submit a compliance report within 15 days.
