Cybersecurity incident disrupts care at New Mexico’s UNM Health

A cybersecurity incident disrupted UNM Health on Oct.

26 in New Mexico.

The University of New Mexico Health System told patients to stay away from its main Albuquerque hospital and canceled appointments across more than 30 clinics.

Ambulances were sent to other hospitals while UNM temporarily stopped accepting new patients and suspended outpatient surgeries.

UNM operates the state’s only Level 1 trauma center, which treats the most serious injuries, so the disruption put added pressure on other hospitals.

Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Lovelace Health System took additional patients.

UNM said the threat affected some user devices but did not reach core systems or servers, and it began restoring services that afternoon.

Care returned to normal the next day, but the incident remains under criminal investigation, and UNM has not confirmed claims that data was stolen.
