Carney urges Alberta to stay in Canada ahead of October 19 vote

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Alberta to remain part of Canada in a Thanksgiving message on Monday.

On October 19, Albertans will vote on 10 questions about the province’s future.

One question asks whether Alberta should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith launched the referendum process to let residents address the province’s place in Canada, but says she supports staying.

Carney warned that separation could lead to a long and uncertain process.

He said Canada faces economic and security threats and is stronger when united.

Advance voting opens Tuesday, and Carney and other political leaders are expected to make their case in Alberta this week.

What people are saying

A week from today, Albertans will have the opportunity to make an important decision about their future, whether to remain part of Canada or begin a long and uncertain process through which Alberta could separate from Canada.

We are stronger together. Generations of Albertans helped build this country. It’s yours. It’s ours. And it’s worth fighting for.

The Premier has been clear that our government, caucus, and party support Alberta remaining in Canada, and we will continue to work to get a strong mandate from Albertans for more sustainable immigration policies and to pursue constitutional reforms that increase our province’s sovereignty within Canada.
