Benvenuto Cellini wins Breeders’ Cup Turf as Sovereignty takes Classic

Benvenuto Cellini won the $5m Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland in Kentucky on Saturday, with jockey Ryan Moore guiding the horse to a three-quarter-length victory.

Moore had switched to the horse after drawing an inside stall, and made his move in the final stretch.

The win was the only victory for a European stable on the day, after several highly regarded European runners were beaten.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien’s 28th Group One or Grade One win of 2026 also equalled his record for a calendar year, set in 2017.

In the day’s richest race, Sovereignty won the $7m Classic for Godolphin, while last year’s winner, Japan’s Forever Young, finished fifth.

Sovereignty is expected to retire to stud, while Benvenuto Cellini will stay in training next season and could race in Hong Kong in December.

Next year’s Breeders’ Cup moves to Belmont Park in New York, which has been redeveloped.
