WA plans to limit screen use in early primary classrooms

Western Australia plans to reduce unnecessary screen use in kindy to Year 2 classrooms at 10 primary schools.

The trial means young children would no longer use iPads for activities such as tracing letters or solving maths problems.

The state government says the move is intended to limit young children’s exposure to digital devices.

For older students, it plans to appoint an advisory group to develop a digital learning and screen-use plan for public schools.

The changes come after Australia recorded its worst-ever reading and numeracy results in a recent international survey.

Victoria and New South Wales are also due to introduce screen-time limits for younger students from next year.

The WA trial is set to roll out across the 10 schools.
