South Korean chip-cluster stocks rise after SK chief visits planned site

Shares in companies linked to a planned semiconductor cluster in South Korea’s Honam region rose sharply on October 12.

The movement followed a visit to the proposed site by SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won the previous week.

The planned cluster is in the Honam region, and the site he visited was a former military airfield in Gwangju.

Chey said that if conditions allow construction, he wants it to proceed as quickly as possible.

He also warned that faster expansion by China or US chipmaker Micron could reduce South Korea’s market share.

Shares in local companies including Kumho Electric and Kumho Construction rose, while Seosan reached the daily trading limit, according to one report.

The shares had previously surged after the cluster plan was announced in June, then declined from the previous month amid questions about its feasibility.

The sources do not say when construction will begin or give a confirmed project schedule.
