Brazil’s Senate expands eligibility for border work allowance

Brazil’s Senate approved a bill expanding the border work allowance on Wednesday, October 28.

The allowance is paid for each day worked in strategic areas where officials help prevent, inspect or respond to cross-border crime.

The bill adds jobs including agricultural inspectors, staff at federal universities, social security workers and employees of regulatory agencies to the eligible groups.

It also raises the daily payment from R$91 to R$191, starting in 2027.

The changes go beyond the government’s original proposal, and the amended bill does not state the cost to public finances.

The bill now goes to the president for approval.

We would have liked the proposal approved to be the original one, the proposal the government sent.

The expansion was very large, but we will not oppose it; we will vote in favor.
