Turkey marks 103 years of the republic with ceremonies across the country

Turkey marked the 103rd anniversary of its republic with ceremonies and public events ahead of Republic Day on 29 October.

In Istanbul, officials and other guests gathered at Taksim Republic Monument for a wreath-laying, a moment of silence and the national anthem.

Cities across the country held their own celebrations, with events reported in Kars, Tunceli, İzmir and Samsun.

In Samsun, participants carried a 1,919-metre Turkish flag during a Republic Walk.

In Tunceli, gendarmerie divers opened a Turkish flag 29 metres below the surface of Keban Dam Lake.

The events commemorated the republic’s founding, with tributes also made to its founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and those who died in service.

The celebrations included public displays of flags and local cultural events, such as a zeybek dance performance in İzmir.
