Turkey’s BIST 100 falls more than 21% since September

Turkey’s BIST 100 share index fell to 11,396 during Monday trading, its lowest point that day.

The index has lost about 21% since 11 September, when the fund-sector crisis came to light.

It fell below two key support levels, 11,600 and 11,500, which analysts had been watching; further declines could bring 11,250 and then the 10,900s into view.

The market is also facing wider pressures, while MSCI has increased its scrutiny of Turkey’s fund sector and warned that the country’s emerging-market status could be at risk in future.

MSCI has not announced a specific change to Turkey’s status, and some investment analysts said the warning’s impact could be limited.

Turkey’s government says a bill to oversee troubled funds has passed a parliamentary committee, and expects it to help limit effects on financial markets and the wider economy.

If parliament passes the bill, interim payments to investors are expected to begin soon; the number of funds in liquidation has fallen from 131 to 65.
