IndyCar’s split history still shapes its racing today

IndyCar’s split history still shapes its racing today

The Indianapolis 500 is IndyCar’s best-known race, held each year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

American open-wheel racing once drew major international attention, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Formula 1 champions including Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti competed in the CART championship.

The creation of the rival Indy Racing League in 1996 split the sport and badly damaged it.

CART later became Champ Car, which declined as the rival series continued.

The two series merged in 2008 after Champ Car neared collapse, but the damage had already been done.

Today, IndyCar uses a single-specification chassis and races on road, street and oval tracks, offering a varied mix of racing circuits.
