Sarajevo holds the largest collection of Hodler works outside Switzerland
Sarajevo’s National Gallery holds the largest collection of works by Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler outside Switzerland.
About 200 pieces, including sketches, drawings and paintings, were shown in an exhibition that ended this weekend.
The collection belonged to Jeanne Charles Cerani Čišić, who modelled for Hodler for 17 years and is pictured in several of his works.
Some pieces were gifts, while others were taken from his studio without permission.
The works show how Hodler developed ideas from early sketches into finished paintings, including his picture “The Day.”
Charles later moved to Bosnia with her diplomat husband and kept the collection with her.
It survived the Bosnian war in the 1990s, when the museum was repeatedly damaged by shelling.
