Vodafone takes second place in Spain’s prepaid mobile market

Vodafone España has overtaken Digi in Spain’s prepaid mobile market and now holds second place.

It has 26% of prepaid lines, compared with 23% for Digi, while Orange leads with 46.5%.

The market still has nine million users, although the number of lines is shrinking.

Prepaid services are often used by tourists and immigrants arriving in Spain, making the country a promising market for these offers.

Vodafone changed its approach after new ownership by Zegona, buying wholesale distributor Sercom last year and introducing services such as eSIMs.

The strategy helped Vodafone gain customers over the summer, when it was the only operator to finish the season with more lines than it started with.

Vodafone is strengthening its position in a shrinking market where prepaid services can still generate significant revenue.
