Ottawa adds nearly $60 million for 62 national sports organizations
Canada’s federal government announced nearly $60 million in extra funding for 62 national sports organizations on Thursday in Ottawa.
Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden said the money will help athletes compete internationally and support sport programs.
The funding is part of a five-year, $660-million increase in sport support first announced in April.
The money is intended to help organizations that have been operating with limited funds and capacity.
A commission report released in March called for major changes, citing abuse concerns, confusing complaint systems and chronic underfunding in Canadian sport.
Van Koeverden said safe sport is a priority for every national organization, not a separate optional program.
The new funding takes effect this fiscal year, but the government has not said exactly when organizations will receive the money.

What people are saying
Today’s announcement reflects a new era for sport in Canada, one where more kids have the opportunity to get out and play, and Team Canada athletes have the support they need to compete and win.
I think it is transformational and that word has been used. And I think it is. I think it is. It's what the sports system really needed.
An underfunded sports system is an unsafe sports system.
