Paris department store BHV enters court-supervised restructuring

A Paris court placed BHV’s parent company under restructuring protection on November 2.

The company includes the historic BHV Marais department store in central Paris and a second store in the Yvelines region.

The court process gives the company six months to show it can recover, with a possible six-month extension.

BHV employs 700 people, and management says the stores will remain open.

The company has faced financial problems, including a lack of cash that its management links to a dispute with Brookfield, the building owner; Brookfield denies owing BHV money.

A proposed Shein store sparked controversy and prompted some brands to leave, though the new owners later ended the partnership.

The protection is meant to preserve jobs and give BHV time to relaunch, while management seeks to conclude talks with Brookfield.

At the end of the court-supervised period, the court can approve a recovery plan, choose a buyer or order liquidation.
