German start-up Helsing plans cheaper weapons to intercept drones

German defence start-up Helsing is developing two drone-interception systems using air-defence missiles and jet-powered projectiles.

The Munich-based company says the weapons are intended to destroy Iranian Shahed drones and faster Russian Geran drones.

Helsing argues that cheaper ways to stop fast drones are needed because existing solutions cost more.

The company is one of Europe’s most valuable defence start-ups.

It expects one system to be ready in the second half of next year.

Handelsblatt says test flights are due in the coming days.

The project adds Helsing to Germany’s competition to develop systems that can defend against attack drones.
