International Criminal Court wins EU's 2026 Sakharov Prize
The EU awarded its 2026 Sakharov Prize to the International Criminal Court on October 22.
The Hague-based court prosecutes war crimes and other serious crimes.
The award recognizes the court's work on human rights and freedoms, the purpose of the prize, which has been given annually since 1988.
The court has faced pressure from US President Donald Trump, who announced sanctions against it and whose administration has threatened to dismantle it.
The dispute escalated after the court issued arrest warrants last year for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister.
The prize is the court's second international recognition this month, after former ICC judge Navi Pillay received the Nobel Peace Prize.
