British actor Patrick Stewart has died at 86 at his home in Los Angeles.

His family said he died after a brief illness involving Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Stewart became a global star as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran for seven seasons.

He also played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, alongside a long career in theatre, television and film.

His performances made him a lasting figure in science fiction and brought Shakespearean stage experience to major screen roles.

Stewart also supported human rights, survivors of domestic violence, refugees, veterans’ mental health services and animal welfare.

He is set to appear again as Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, due in December 2026.
