Artist makes documentary about his late mother, a famous Korean restaurant owner
Artist Hong Seung-pyo made a documentary about his late mother, Jeong Ui-man, who became known as the “swearing grandma” of her restaurant in Pocheon, South Korea.
She built a following with hearty meals and a blunt manner that regulars came to see as warm and caring.
After Jeong became seriously ill in 2009, Hong cared for her and began recording their daily life; he also discovered she had started drawing on the wall beside her bed.
Her drawings recalled episodes from her life, including periods of hardship and her years selling goods around Pocheon.
Jeong died in 2017, aged 92, and Hong later brought together his recordings and other material to make the 72-minute film, *The Swearing Grandma*.
The documentary is a tribute to his mother and preserves her story and artwork for audiences.
It opens in 70 Megabox cinemas across South Korea on Nov.
4, after preview screenings in Seoul and Uijeongbu on Oct.
