Indonesia Stock Exchange schedules meeting on ownership reform

The Indonesia Stock Exchange has scheduled a special shareholders’ meeting for October 28 to discuss its ownership reform.

The plan is called demutualisation, meaning the bourse could allow investors outside its current member firms to become shareholders.

The change is part of a financial-sector law, but the exchange’s current rules limit share ownership to its members and do not allow dividends.

The exchange must change its rules and articles of association first, and the regulator says the bourse is not yet ready for that process.

Indonesia’s Danantara sovereign investment agency has discussed investing through its investment arm, and a stake above 5% would need regulatory evaluation.

Other possible investors named include the Finance Ministry, Bank Indonesia and other Indonesian legal entities.

Any share offer and price negotiations would come later, after the meeting and the required rule changes; the timing depends on the exchange’s readiness.
