Stan Lee Set Man-Thing’s Creation in Motion at Marvel

Stan Lee asked Marvel creators to develop Man-Thing, a monster character, around 1970.

Writers Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway and artist Gray Morrow are credited with the character’s debut story.

Man-Thing first appeared in 1971, after a revision to the Comics Code allowed more horror content in comics.

The code had restricted horror stories since the 1950s.

Lee gave the character its name and a basic idea, though the writers reportedly worried it could be confused with the Thing from the Fantastic Four.

Len Wein later wrote another Man-Thing story before moving to DC, where he helped create Swamp Thing.

The two monster heroes developed in parallel at rival comic publishers, making their origin stories a notable piece of comics history.
