Street Fighter opens with $51 million worldwide as Whalefall takes $17 million

Street Fighter earned $51 million worldwide in its opening weekend, including $31 million in the US and Canada.

The video game adaptation, made by Paramount and Legendary with publisher Capcom, cost $82 million to produce.

Its opening was described as middling, and its B- CinemaScore may make it harder to keep drawing audiences.

Whalefall opened to $17 million worldwide, including $7.3 million in the US and Canada.

The survival thriller follows a scuba diver who is swallowed by a whale and had a reported net budget of $60 million.

Positive reviews have not yet translated into a strong opening: Whalefall received a B CinemaScore and higher Rotten Tomatoes scores from critics and audiences than Street Fighter.

Both films now depend on continued audience interest, and Whalefall could use word of mouth to limit its losses.

Street Fighter faces competition from DC’s Clayface next weekend, while the box-office results for both films will become clearer in the weeks ahead.
