Singapore to redevelop mental health institute and expand capacity by 2040
Singapore plans to expand and rebuild its main mental health institute by 2040.
In 2027, the institute will be renamed the National Centre for Mental Health Singapore and help coordinate care and research.
Regional hospitals are also building up their mental health services.
The changes aim to meet rising demand and make it easier for people, including young people, to get help.
Singapore plans to expand and redevelop the Institute of Mental Health at its current site by 2040, with planning already under way.
In 2027, the institute is due to become the National Centre for Mental Health Singapore, a national specialty centre that will lead research and coordinate psychiatric care across hospitals.
Changi General Hospital, Woodlands Hospital and Alexandra Hospital are strengthening their psychiatric capabilities.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said demand for mental health support is rising, particularly among young people; community services are helping more than twice as many youths as before, and national mindline 1771 handles about 9,000 calls a month.
Singapore is developing guidance on parental consent for mental health services, while the Singapore Medical Council is revising its ethical guidelines for doctors.
Ong said the system should let young people seek help safely and involve families appropriately as care progresses.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The Institute of Mental Health has long been the bedrock of specialist psychiatric care in Singapore. But looking ahead, IMH will need stronger support from other hospitals.
Seeking mental health support should not, by itself, become a mark against a person,
But we should not let any across-the-board requirement for parental consent become a barrier to seeking help.
We need a balanced approach. The right system is one that lets a young person enter through a safe door, and then involve the family appropriately as the care journey progresses,
