Darrell Waltrip Gives Rick Hendrick His Tide Ride Helmet

Darrell Waltrip gave Rick Hendrick his Tide Ride helmet at a Motor Racing Outreach event.

Waltrip drove for Hendrick Motorsports from 1987 to 1990, winning nine Cup Series races, including the 1989 Daytona 500.

Waltrip has been diagnosed with frontotemporal degeneration, and the condition has led him to step back from public life and spend more time with his family.

Hendrick already had Waltrip’s Tide firesuit, and the helmet adds another item from their racing years to the collection.

Hendrick said the helmet will go on display at the Hendrick Motorsports museum.

Waltrip and his wife, Stevie, helped found Motor Racing Outreach in 1989; the nonprofit supports NASCAR families with chaplaincy, counseling and other care.
