Canada and China extend trade deal through 2028
Canada and China extended their trade deal through the end of 2028 in an announcement made in Beijing on Wednesday.
The deal keeps China’s higher tariffs paused on Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab.
Those tariff pauses began in March after Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Beijing in January, and had been due to expire at the end of 2026.
In return, Canada will continue market access for certain Chinese steel and aluminum products until the end of 2028.
The extension gives Canadian farmers and seafood businesses more certainty about selling to China.
Canada says it wants to grow exports to China by 50 per cent by 2030, and the trade arrangement is part of that effort.
Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said talks are continuing on other seafood products.
China has extended tariff relief for Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab until the end of 2028.
The relief covers suspended tariffs of 100 per cent on canola meal and peas and 25 per cent on lobster and crab.
Canada will also extend market access through remission measures for some Chinese steel and aluminum products until the end of 2028.
The measures were announced on Wednesday after a meeting in Beijing involving International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu.
The extension replaces arrangements that were due to expire at the end of 2026.
