At Least Five Explosions Reported on Iran’s Qeshm Island

At least five explosions were reported on Qeshm Island, in Iran, on Monday.

Iranian authorities have not confirmed what caused them, and the cause remains unclear.

The reports came hours after US President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran could be close, while Tehran confirmed intensive negotiations were under way.

The explosions add uncertainty during diplomatic efforts to prevent a new conflict.

Iran has said it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy exports from the Gulf, but only if the United States meets its conditions.

Those conditions include ending hostilities, releasing frozen Iranian assets, lifting oil sanctions and ending a US blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran says the strait could reopen within two days if Washington agrees to its terms.
