French parliament unanimously rejects 2027 state budget in first reading

France’s National Assembly rejected the 2027 state budget on Wednesday in its first reading.

All 458 deputies who voted opposed it, after they had substantially changed the government’s original proposal.

Deputies rejected the budget’s revenue section, which meant the entire text fell with it.

The draft aims to bring the public deficit to 5% of gross domestic product in 2027.

The Senate will examine the government’s original version from November 20, rather than the amended text rejected by the Assembly.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s team said compromise would come after the Senate stage, describing the rejection as a familiar opening move in budget talks.
