Indonesia aims to double palm oil productivity to 4 tonnes per hectare

Indonesia’s government wants to raise palm oil productivity from about 2 to 4 tonnes per hectare.

Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the country has about 17 million hectares of palm oil plantations.

The plan focuses on improving output from existing plantations rather than expanding their area.

Higher productivity is intended to help supply raw materials for energy production.

Sugarcane is also being considered for ethanol, but expanding it would require more plantation land and technical discussions across ministries.

The government is assessing degraded land for possible development, while President Prabowo Subianto has directed that natural forests not be converted.

Officials are mapping and verifying land before choosing locations.
