Hong Kong artists bring everyday details to Venice exhibition
Hong Kong-born artists Kingsley Ng and Angel Hui are showing new installations in Venice in an exhibition called Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice.
The Hong Kong Museum of Art curated the exhibition to mark 25 years since Hong Kong first took part in the Venice Biennale.
Ng’s work uses projected light and sounds from nighttime workplaces to connect the two cities through the labour that keeps them running.
Hui’s installations transform familiar Hong Kong details, including goldfish in plastic bags and an ornate window frame, into works for visitors to look at closely.
Both artists invite visitors to pause and notice ordinary things, rather than focus on grand displays.
The title Fermata refers both to a musical pause and to stops for Venetian water buses, echoing the contrast between Hong Kong’s faster pace and Venice’s slower one.
The exhibition remains open until 22 November in a historic residential building in Venice’s Campo della Tana neighbourhood.

What people are saying
What we hope visitors take away from the exhibition is a moment of reflection
These modest, often overlooked processes that keep a city alive do not only connect Venice and Hong Kong.
The experience reminded me that a work does not need to be grand to hold meaning.
The difference in pace is pronounced: Hong Kong often presses forward, while Venice seems to make room for pause.
