Red Sox Agree to Minor League Deal With Catcher Riley Adams

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a minor league deal with catcher Riley Adams, who is 30 and spent the season in Triple-A with the Washington Nationals.

Adams hit .273 with 16 home runs there, but his major league career batting average is .211.

He became a minor league free agent after Washington did not add him to its 40-man roster.

The deal gives Boston an experienced depth option, rather than an established place on the major league team.

The Red Sox have Adley Rutschman, Connor Wong and Mickey Gasper as catching options on their 40-man roster.

Adams is expected to attend spring training as a non-roster player, while Boston could also seek a more established backup this winter.
