Duke beats Virginia 19-16 on late trick-play touchdown

Duke beat Virginia 19-16 in Charlottesville on Friday night, ending a two-game losing streak.

With 1:14 left, running back Nate Sheppard threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brody Keefe, turning a 16-13 deficit into the winning score.

Virginia had taken the lead on a field goal with three minutes remaining, but Duke caught its defense off guard with the late trick-play touchdown.

The teams had met in last season’s ACC championship game, which Duke won in overtime after Virginia had beaten Duke in the regular season.

The win moved Duke to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while Virginia fell to 4-4 and 2-3.

The result keeps Duke’s hopes of reaching a second straight ACC title game alive, while Virginia has lost three of its last four games.

Duke next hosts Boston College on Oct.

31, and Virginia visits Wake Forest that day.
