Japan’s Kozo Tashima plans to challenge Infantino for Fifa presidency
Kozo Tashima plans to challenge Gianni Infantino in next year’s Fifa presidential election.
Tashima is the honorary president of the Japan Football Association and a former player and coach for Japan.
He says Japan’s football association supports his candidacy, and he wants to promote integrity and high standards in the sport.
Candidates must secure support from five Fifa member associations to get on the ballot.
The election comes after criticism of Infantino over a proposal to sell part of Fifa’s commercial rights to private investors, which was later abandoned.
Infantino is seeking a fourth term and has received public backing from several football confederations and countries.
The candidate deadline is 18 November, and the vote is scheduled for March.
