Russian traffic police to gain power to revoke licences from March 2027
From March 1, 2027, Russia’s traffic police can revoke licences when a driver is medically unfit to drive.
The change will use automatic information sharing between medical organisations and traffic police to report medical conditions that rule out driving.
People applying for a licence will be refused if authorities receive information about a relevant medical restriction.
Current drivers will be required to undergo a medical assessment and a specialist examination within three months.
If these confirm a condition that makes driving unsafe, their right to drive will be ended automatically.
At present, revoking a licence on medical grounds requires a prosecutor to bring a case and a court to decide.
The new process is intended to make action faster by removing the need for a court case.
