The Hague residents take property owner to court over invasive knotweed

Residents of The Hague’s Bomenbuurt say Japanese knotweed is spreading from a garden on Thomsonlaan into their own gardens.

One resident has taken the property’s owner to court, asking him to remove the plant from his land and the resident’s garden.

Japanese knotweed is an invasive plant that is difficult to eradicate because its roots must also be removed.

It can damage sewers and building foundations, as well as crowd out native plants.

Nine residents have raised concerns with the owner, who does not live at the property and rents it out.

His lawyer says a contractor has been found to clear the garden, but disputes that it caused the neighbourhood’s wider problem and says more investigation is needed.

The judge is due to rule in two weeks, and another case against the owner is scheduled for next week.
