‘City of God’ returns with a story of militias and corrupt politicians

The second season of City of God: The Fight Rages On has arrived on HBO Max, two years after the show began.

Set in 2004, it follows Berenice as she seeks support from residents while competing with councilman Israel, who is linked to a militia and organized crime.

Buscapé investigates the criminal ties behind journalist Lígia’s murder, which ended the first season.

Meanwhile, Jerusa approaches Israel with a business plan that serves a corrupt public security secretary seeking more influence in the favela.

The story links local politics, militias and criminal groups, while also giving space to family life, romance and efforts to confront crime without weapons.

The series continues the story of the 2002 film City of God, which reached international audiences but was later criticized for romanticizing violence and stereotyping favelas.

Whether another season is made depends on audience numbers, and the director says long gaps between seasons can weaken viewers’ interest.

The series speaks a lot to the moment we are living in, in relation to coups and political links with the wrong people. Brazilian art has always been a place for denunciation, for talking about our time.
