Chennai hospital treats severe aortic valve leakage with HANCHOR valve
A 63-year-old man with severe aortic valve leakage was treated at Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai.
The leakage happened because a hole in one leaflet of his aortic valve allowed blood to flow backwards into his heart.
He had also previously undergone mitral valve replacement, making the procedure more complex.
Doctors used a catheter-based valve replacement procedure, called TAVR, rather than open surgery.
TAVR can be challenging when the existing valve has too little calcium to help secure a replacement, so the team used a HANCHOR valve with an anchoring mechanism designed to grip the existing valve leaflets.
Post-procedure checks found no remaining leakage or abnormal narrowing, and the hospital reported no significant problems with the heart’s electrical signals.
The patient was discharged three days later.
Kauvery Hospital in Chennai treated a 63-year-old man for severe leakage from his aortic valve using a minimally invasive procedure.
The hospital used a HANCHOR valve designed to anchor securely despite limited calcium deposits in the existing valve.
The patient had a hole in an aortic valve leaflet and had previously undergone mitral valve replacement.
Checks after the procedure found no remaining leakage through or around the replacement valve and no abnormal narrowing.
The patient was discharged three days later.
- Who
- A 63-year-old man was treated by a cardiology team at Kauvery Hospital.
- What
- The hospital used a HANCHOR valve in a transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure to treat severe aortic valve leakage.
- When
- The treatment date is not stated.
- Where
- Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai.
- Why
- The patient had severe leakage from a hole in an aortic valve leaflet. His previous mitral valve replacement and the challenge of anchoring a replacement valve with limited calcium deposits added complexity.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The hospital treated the patient with a HANCHOR valve using transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
Checks showed no remaining leakage through or around the replacement valve and no abnormal narrowing.
The patient was discharged.
