Low Allowance Leaves Paju School Short of Safety Volunteers

Low Allowance Leaves Paju School Short of Safety Volunteers

A Paju elementary school has only one safety volunteer because it has struggled to find more people.

The volunteer works during pupil arrival and dismissal, rather than throughout the school day.

Gyeonggi Province's education office recommends three volunteers covering nine class hours in shifts.

The school cannot follow that guidance with just one person.

An education office official said the school is in an outlying area and the allowance is about 7,000 won an hour, making the role less appealing than other jobs for older people.

The coverage gap means the school has no volunteer on duty during much of the day.
