Hyundai Motor Group plans $15.5 billion investment in India over seven years

Hyundai Motor Group chairman Euisun Chung met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 13.

Chung said the company plans to invest about $15.5 billion in India over seven years.

The group says its new Pune factory gives it annual production capacity of 1.4 million vehicles in the country.

Hyundai first entered India in 1996, and the group wants the country to serve as a major production base and market.

India is the world’s third-largest car market, and high import duties make local production important.

Last year, Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 852,164 vehicles in India, with an 18.7% market share.

Planned investments include factories, research, suppliers and new technology, and the group also plans to set up an investment company in India.
