Brazil begins making hull component for first nuclear submarine

Brazil’s Navy has begun making a hull component for the country’s first nuclear submarine.

The first cut of the steel plate took place in Cherbourg, France, in late October.

The submarine is conventionally armed and is being developed through cooperation between Brazil and France, which includes technology transfer and technical and industrial training.

Brazil announced the project in Rio de Janeiro in 2023, and delivery is expected in 2035.

The Navy says the vessel will help protect national sovereignty and Brazil’s maritime area known as the Blue Amazon.

A land-based laboratory will test the submarine’s energy system and operating scenarios as construction and engineering work continue.

Brazil is among a small group of countries developing nuclear submarines, and this project marks a new stage in its effort.
