Grand jury declines to indict Cassidy Hutchinson over Jan. 6 testimony
A federal grand jury declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her testimony about the Jan.
6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division handled the investigation, and a division lawyer told a judge the grand jury had not agreed to the proposed indictment.
Hutchinson was a top aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and testified to a House committee investigating the attack in 2022.
She said President Donald Trump and Meadows were warned that some supporters carried weapons, and described an account in which Trump tried to grab a car’s steering wheel; Trump’s driver later disputed that account under oath.
Prosecutors’ effort to indict her did not secure the grand jury’s approval, though it is not clear which parts of her testimony were examined.
The Justice Department had not responded to a request for comment, and no further steps were specified.
A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her testimony to Congress about January 6.
The Justice Department had sought charges over allegations that Hutchinson made false statements to the House committee investigating the 2021 Capitol attack.
Hutchinson testified in 2022 about President Donald Trump’s actions before and during the attack, including an account of him lunging for a vehicle’s steering wheel.
Her account of the vehicle incident was disputed by other people, including Trump’s driver, according to the reports.
The grand jury’s decision does not determine whether Hutchinson’s testimony was truthful or false.
